drowned in sound
Resisting the urge to make a “levees broke” joke, I must report in earnest that Sea Level Records in Echo Park will be closing its doors forever. I have seen many fledgling “next-thing”ers trying to make in-store appearances there and I have seen no better selection than I have at Amoeba. But it’s still sad to know that a neighborhood record store cannot, under any conventional circumstances, stay afloat (sorry). CDs are unnecessary - vinyl is a strange demand to deal with - and unless you have something really different to offer no one cares.
Sea Level was a vibrant part of the Echo Park economy, contributing to it while the gentrification movements sucked out the culture. I mean, I guess. Everything in the store goes on sale June 1st. If you value physical manifestations of music, go right now cause it’s a bargain. If you want to party with them and say you were there, go to Safari Sam’s on Friday, June 22.
Sea Level will be missed by anyone who has tried to do something in the music scene this side of town.
